Stephen Young, MPT, OCS started Mountaineer Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine in August of 2001. He has had the privilege of treating thousands of patients and helping them recover and return their lives to normal. Stephen specializes in treating outpatient orthopedic and sports injuries. He is the only certified specialist in orthopedic physical therapy in the area. Additionally, he is one of only approximately 3000 to be certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy (ABPTS) in orthopedics. The certification demonstrates both an advanced level of knowledge about joint and muscle problems and clinical expertise about how to correct them. Recently, Stephen accepted an appointment as a clinical faculty member for West Virginia’s Physical Therapy Program. Currently, he is also pursuing his Doctoral degree in physical therapy as well as an advanced certification in manual therapy.

Stephen was the Valedictorian of Richwood high school in 1992. He then received his Master of Physical Therapy and Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University in 2000 and 1996 respectively. Stephen currently resides in Summersville with his wife, Amy. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, West Virginia Physical Therapy Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy, and American College of Sports Medicine.

“Physical Therapy consists of addressing the underlying cause of a person’s injury or condition and educating him or her on the correction and prevention of recurrence,” says Stephen, who believes in taking a proactive approach to reducing pain and increasing function in his patients.
